A Photo Essay by Vickie Danielsen with Myrna Windecker
As we leave Walden and North Park, we continue to be overwhelmed by the huge amounts
of evergreen trees which are dying in the northern parts of our state. We much prefer to focus on
the beauty — and that's still abundant — but there is so much red, so much dead, it's impossible
not to notice. It is suggested that the general warming of the climate is such that our winters no
longer get cold enough to freeze the larvae, therefore allowing them to develop into adults which
continue the destructive species. The damage they do is certain; what should be done about them isn't.
